Apr 17 – Finally our first in-person meeting

We finally had our first in-person meeting, with some of our California members joining us via Zoom. Thanks to Vijay Vedala and Lokanath Polepalli, HTMS board member, the technical set up worked well. Lokanath also kindly helped us in setting up and later taking down tables and chairs. Dr. Rao, in finalizing his presentations on Stamp Collecting 101 gave life instructions on how to soak stamps off paper and presented various examples of stamp catalogs and magazines. For the first time in almost a year we held an auction again, in which three members offered philatelic material on which attendees and even members from California were bidding successfully.

A special thought regarding JPS

JPS is a club of volunteer members, who are interested in the collection of stamps. Due to the efforts of a handful of members, I believe, we are off to a good re-start of the society. However, to continue and be long-term successful, we cannot just leave all the work to these few. That way the Society almost collapsed last year! We need every adult member to pitch in with a little effort and not just remain passive on the sidelines. We have a number of new members and I am asking our longer-term members to come to the meetings, interact with the new members and share their experience. Make them feel welcome is the responsibility of all of us! Our new members are very keen to build and expand their stamp collections and are highly interested in our auctions. To meet that demand, we need a continuous supply of philatelic material to be auctioned off. Please bring your items to the meetings or – if for health reasons, you cannot personally attend meetings – send them to me or K.R. Rao (during the summer) together with filled out auction slips, so we know, what your minimum asking bid is. We’ll handle it from there and send you the money earned as soon as possible after the auction.

Age or health should not be an unsurmountable obstacle for participation! Every member of the Society can contribute in one or several of the following ways:

Contribute ideas for the programs and website contents,

Give a short presentation on a philatelic topic of your interest,

Offer stamps and related material at auction,

Donate stamps to give away to junior members.

Membership Dues

If you have not paid your 2021 membership dues, please send your check made out to JPS to the JPS treasurer, P. O. Box 16792, Brandon, MS 39236-6792. Dues are $ 5.- for individuals and $ 10 for families.

JPS Website

When we re-activated the JPS, we just put some very basic information on our website. With Vijay’s leadership, we want to make the site more interesting and appealing for both our members as well as the general public interested in our hobby of stamp collecting. Please – everybody – think about what we can do to expand and improve the contents of the website and e-mail your ideas to KR with a copy to Vijay and myself.

New stamp issues

The National Weather Service has issued a severe flood warning due to the upcoming USPS release of 36 new stamps within the months of May and June:

Acting President

At the end of the month, I’ll leave for Colorado for the summer and early fall. Our Vice President, Dr. K. R Rao will substitute for me during my absence. Please give KR all the support he needs to make everything we do a success.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be on May 15 at 10:00 am at the Hindu Temple, 173 Vernon Jones Avenue, Brandon, MS. The program will be a short introduction to “Stamps of the German States” by myself. We will also have an auction again. Please be a little early to set up chairs and tables for the meeting and afterwards help out to take everything down.

We will wear facemasks and maintain social distancing during the meeting.
