March 2021 Newsletter Volume 52, Number 3

February 20 Meeting

The society had its 2nd Zoom meeting on February 20 with a good attendance of 27 members. Dr. K. R. Rao’s 1st part of his presentation on “Stamp Collecting 101” was well received, in particular, by our new members and we are looking forward to part 2 of his talk at the next Zoom meeting on March 20.

The minutes of the February meeting by Dr. Indira Rao are included in this newsletter.

A source for stamps

Filling gaps in one’s collection is always a challenge, in particular, if one is trying to complete a set and one is only looking for one or two stamps out of that set. Sometimes, well established companies like Mystic, Kenmore or Golden Valley only sell complete sets, although they publish the price for individual stamps in their listings. They also normally charge the full Scott catalog value plus an additional fee for shipping and handling, which in Mystic’s case is $ 2.50 per order regardless of the size of the order.

About a year ago I was made aware of an alternative source, which I have used several times since then and was quite satisfied. It is a web-based organization

called “stamps2go.com”. It consists of stamp dealers and individuals who offer worldwide stamps and the prices posted by most of them are about 50% of Scott catalog value, sometimes even less and rarely up to 100%. The shipping & handling fees charged (regardless of order size) are $1 per order by US based sellers and normally $2 by international sellers. You might want to check it out. I found the site easy to search. You would have to register (no cost) and then search the listings for a stamp by country and Scott catalog number.

JPS Auctions

As soon as we will have in-person meetings again, we will start to have auctions of stamps and philatelic items. Please be prepared! Clean out your unwanted material and auction it off. Below is an auction slip, which should be filled out to accompany every item you are submitting for auction. If you want to donate the auction proceeds to JPS, please circle (yes) on the slip. If you do not have a Scott catalog value, fill in a reasonable estimate and your minimum requested bid.
